1, 2, 1 Sue, here we are.
Sir Daniel:We are.
Jay Ray:I just know I was like,
Sir Daniel:I thought she was selling.
Sir Daniel:I thought you were giving me directions now we're crowned down.
Sir Daniel:Hey, what's up everybody.
Sir Daniel:Welcome to cue points.
Sir Daniel:This is a soft opening of a brand new show.
Sir Daniel:I am DJ Sudan.
Sir Daniel:What's
Jay Ray:happening.
Jay Ray:I am Jay Ray also known as Johnny Ray.
Jay Ray:Kornegay the,
Sir Daniel:the amen.
Sir Daniel:And this is cue points, as I said before, this is, um, you know, I guess you and I,
Sir Daniel:we were talking, it's been a hard year.
Sir Daniel:The past year was ridiculous.
Sir Daniel:It has been a super hard, super hard year for everybody.
Sir Daniel:And I think the one thing that has kept us safe.
Sir Daniel:And kept us afloat is music.
Sir Daniel:Absolutely.
Sir Daniel:And being a DJ, um, a vinyl collector and our co-host of this show, I know, you
Sir Daniel:know, we have a connection around music.
Sir Daniel:And so we were just talking about how much music has meant to us in this time.
Sir Daniel:And wanting to have conversation around music.
Sir Daniel:That's not necessarily like a hot, a hot take show or, you
Sir Daniel:know, what's your top five dead or alive, you know, that's been done.
Sir Daniel:I want to, I think I'd like to come from it from a place of appreciation, all
Sir Daniel:the music that we've enjoyed over the years and different things that have
Sir Daniel:come up from a historical standpoint.
Jay Ray:What did you know?
Jay Ray:I, I, I'm excited that we are embarking on this journey, you know, one of
Jay Ray:the things, um, and it was last year.
Jay Ray:Yeah.
Jay Ray:Kind of mid last year when, um, I decided to start like researching various
Jay Ray:moments in black music history and kind of doing the black music mixtape thing.
Jay Ray:Yeah.
Jay Ray:And, um, one, because I needed something.
Jay Ray:Fill me up.
Jay Ray:Um, so we've talked a lot about joy, right?
Jay Ray:As it, as it relates to this, th this show that we're doing, I
Jay Ray:needed something that filled me up.
Jay Ray:And also I needed something to like occupy, um, this, this void of space.
Jay Ray:Like I felt like there was something I needed to do.
Jay Ray:That was a little bit more music related than what I was.
Jay Ray:And, um, I'm excited that we're here doing this and, um, for those of you
Jay Ray:that are watching and for those of you that are listening to the podcast, thank
Jay Ray:you so much for taking this journey at whatever point you decide to come
Sir Daniel:into the journey.
Sir Daniel:Absolutely.
Sir Daniel:I know a lot of, you know, this is a soft opening, like I said,
Sir Daniel:and so we will work on other, on the platforms, other platforms.
Sir Daniel:Cause not everybody likes Facebook, but we got.
Sir Daniel:We got you and ed, can we invest in what you were saying about
Sir Daniel:doing the stuff that gave you joy?
Sir Daniel:I, it was like whenever I went out, the stuff that brought me happiness
Sir Daniel:was going to the record store.
Sir Daniel:As you can see,
Sir Daniel:and collecting, you know, just collecting records, de.
Sir Daniel:Dennis, I didn't care about like a financial value or this is a $50
Sir Daniel:record to add to my collection.
Sir Daniel:Now, nothing like that.
Sir Daniel:It was about music.
Sir Daniel:That meant something to me and made me happy.
Sir Daniel:Yeah.
Sir Daniel:Yes,
Jay Ray:no, I'm right there with you.
Jay Ray:Like it's interesting.
Jay Ray:I joined a, um, a record club and it was the first time that I got in.
Jay Ray:I mean, I have colored vinyl in my collection only because
Jay Ray:like, but I looked up on it.
Jay Ray:Like, it wasn't like something I was trying to have.
Jay Ray:Right.
Jay Ray:But I got one in the thing and I realized.
Jay Ray:You know, the music for me, right.
Jay Ray:Where you are, is about what I get from it.
Jay Ray:Not about what it is I'm going to actually play this record.
Jay Ray:You know what I'm saying?
Jay Ray:Like, it's not going to sit on the shelf and be like, Ooh, it's it's here.
Jay Ray:I'm going to play the record.
Jay Ray:And hopefully I can share that record or that joy from that
Sir Daniel:record with other people.
Sir Daniel:And speaking of playing, I had the, the pleasure of having my first.
Sir Daniel:In-person gig two Fridays ago at this spot here in, um, in Atlanta
Sir Daniel:called best in brewing company.
Sir Daniel:Shout out to DJ Johnny normal and the crew over there.
Sir Daniel:And the thank God, his vinyl crew, because that was.
Sir Daniel:I got to be outside.
Sir Daniel:I got to be with people and it was, it was so full of energy.
Sir Daniel:Like people are starving to get back out there.
Sir Daniel:And I don't know if you've been watching the news, but apparently if you've been
Sir Daniel:vaccinated, oh, it's about to be on.
Sir Daniel:And it's basically like they just, CDC just released the.
Sir Daniel:Oh, the statement stating that if you've been vaccinated, you
Sir Daniel:can be outdoors without a mask.
Sir Daniel:You can be in some places without masks, if you're, if you're fully vaccinated.
Sir Daniel:So as the kids say we out share
Jay Ray:I'll cheer, listen, I'm fully vaccinated.
Jay Ray:I'm headed to I'm traveling for the first time.
Jay Ray:Um, for music traveling for the first time, literally.
Jay Ray:Y'all I am getting on a plane, I'm packing up stuff and I'm getting on a
Jay Ray:plane and I'm literally was only going to doing it because I'm going to dance.
Jay Ray:I would've came home.
Jay Ray:I'm staying the whole week, cause my birthday's coming up, but I literally
Jay Ray:am only getting on the plane.
Jay Ray:Cause Louie Vegas plan, I want to dance the Louie Vega.
Sir Daniel:Like if you're an audio file, you have some Louie Vega
Sir Daniel:has touched a record that you.
Sir Daniel:He's such the remix.
Sir Daniel:Matter of fact, I played, uh, um, Vanessa Williams.
Sir Daniel:I've got work to do remit.
Sir Daniel:At at the gig and that's the Louie Vega remix.
Sir Daniel:Louie Vega is all over the place, but I'm glad you mentioned your
Sir Daniel:birthday happy almost birthday.
Sir Daniel:Um, let's get started.
Sir Daniel:Like there's some big birthdays that have come up already
Sir Daniel:because it's tourist season.
Sir Daniel:So I, you know, shout out, shout out to all your tours is out there.
Sir Daniel:Well, one of my favorite DJs and our mentors are here in Atlanta, DJ
Sir Daniel:apple, Jack just had a birthday today.
Sir Daniel:Today is a national holiday because it's Stevie Wonder's birthday.
Jay Ray:Listen, seventy one seven, which is nuts that, uh, Stevie wonder is.
Jay Ray:Only 71.
Jay Ray:Like it feels like Stevie wonder has been on the earth for forever.
Jay Ray:And I'm so glad.
Jay Ray:And, and, and I'm so glad we're doing this show because we have to honor our
Jay Ray:folks while they're here as Stevie wonder, give all the flour that we can find all
Jay Ray:of them to Stevie today on his birthday.
Sir Daniel:Favorite songs, Stevie wonder song.
Jay Ray:Another star.
Jay Ray:Um, um, oh God, there's so many.
Jay Ray:Oh my God.
Jay Ray:There's so many.
Jay Ray:Oh my God.
Jay Ray:Superwoman.
Jay Ray:Um, I'm going to pick those two for now, but another star,
Sir Daniel:another store is definitely on my top list.
Sir Daniel:Um, do I, do I love to watch overjoy?
Jay Ray:Oh, that's such a great tool
Sir Daniel:and low key.
Sir Daniel:I love what he do with Jermaine Jackson.
Sir Daniel:Jamaica he made he, um, it was right.
Sir Daniel:If you hadn't seen that.
Jay Ray:I know I, of course I know what it is.
Jay Ray:It's escaping me.
Jay Ray:Who knows who's watching and who does it listen,
Sir Daniel:but listen, he pulled out.
Sir Daniel:He pulled out a Jermaine Jackson, the best CD one, the impersonation ever
Jay Ray:loves D. Love Stevie.
Jay Ray:We got a lot of stuff that we wanted to cover on this.
Jay Ray:Um, uh, two with y'all tonight.
Jay Ray:And one of the interesting things that has happened today, and this is really
Jay Ray:high level, but the rock and roll hall of fame inductees have been announced,
Sir Daniel:the rock and roll hall of fame.
Sir Daniel:Inductees.
Sir Daniel:Can you believe that some people are just now getting their flowers?
Sir Daniel:And it's wild.
Sir Daniel:Like just, let's just go through the list real quick.
Sir Daniel:So in the performer category, finally at the top of the list,
Sir Daniel:Tina Turner is getting her propers
Jay Ray:finally, as a solo act, she's, she's already inducted as
Jay Ray:part of I can see Tina Turner, but she absolutely needs to be.
Jay Ray:Then there is solo.
Sir Daniel:Come on, give it up for the ass of queen Tina Turner.
Sir Daniel:Yes, indeed.
Sir Daniel:Um, Carol King.
Jay Ray:Just getting into the rocket road.
Jay Ray:Tapestry was for a long time.
Jay Ray:One of the biggest selling records of all time, like you play tapestry Eva today.
Jay Ray:Those are some of the most gorgeous songs you've ever heard.
Jay Ray:And Carol King has just written these amazing tunes.
Jay Ray:I was surprised.
Jay Ray:I thought she was in like,
Sir Daniel:she's pinned everything.
Sir Daniel:She's been covered a million times.
Sir Daniel:It's crazy.
Sir Daniel:Now here's the controversial one, Jay Z. Some people are a little,
Sir Daniel:you know, they got their panties in a bunch of little bit over JCB.
Jay Ray:Totally deserves to be inducted like J um, in terms of impact.
Jay Ray:Um, In terms of impact.
Jay Ray:I mean, I just don't see how he couldn't be.
Jay Ray:He needs to, he, yeah, this makes perfect sense.
Jay Ray:And I'm guessing this is probably his first, his first availability
Jay Ray:to be inducted, I would imagine.
Jay Ray:Um, or it might, it might be a little over, but whatever.
Jay Ray:No, 96.
Jay Ray:So yeah, this is probably first time out.
Jay Ray:JZ deserves it.
Jay Ray:So sure.
Jay Ray:Jay
Sir Daniel:staying in the hip hop lane LL.
Sir Daniel:The goats, the garden inducted.
Jay Ray:Yup.
Jay Ray:And under musical excellence, which I love.
Jay Ray:So one of the things I noticed until I looked this up, but, um, the musical
Jay Ray:excellence award are these folks that have been like pivotal that had
Jay Ray:like really helped to shape music.
Jay Ray:Absolutely deserves to be in there from a, from a MC standpoint.
Jay Ray:Um, there is, he's one of those like forks in the road, um, from
Jay Ray:that standpoint, so perfect choice.
Sir Daniel:And now as a cultural cachet with rock the bells
Sir Daniel:radio, where he's employing.
Sir Daniel:Some of our hip-hop icons to be on the air.
Sir Daniel:All of the iconic music from the past is being played continuously.
Sir Daniel:So it's being loved on by the, by our generation that grew up on it.
Sir Daniel:And now it's being rediscovered by the young ones coming up to gen Z's that
Sir Daniel:are out there, you know, them have to be riding in the car with their mom and dad.
Sir Daniel:And they're like, ah, I got to sit through rock the bells radio, but
Sir Daniel:yes, you really you'll love it.
Sir Daniel:You do.
Sir Daniel:The love it.
Sir Daniel:Can't forget our early influence awards.
Sir Daniel:Gil Scott Heron
Jay Ray:absolutely deserved.
Jay Ray:I'm surprised this hasn't happened already.
Jay Ray:I'm glad it's happening now.
Jay Ray:Craft work, craft work.
Jay Ray:I mean, okay.
Jay Ray:Foundation
Sir Daniel:records for hip hop
Jay Ray:found literally foundation records.
Jay Ray:Um, when you start thinking of the inspiration for, um, techno
Jay Ray:and electro, all of that, that was happening in Detroit at the time,
Jay Ray:Kraftwerk was so inspirational to those groups that created this music.
Jay Ray:So, absolutely perfect.
Jay Ray:Um, and one of my, uh, and, and, uh, one of my favorites, Billy Preston.
Jay Ray:It's in the fifth beetle.
Jay Ray:He's just
Jay Ray:was a thing.
Jay Ray:One, um, just the black gay man, one and two, he was the fifth beetle and he is
Jay Ray:now being inducted into the rock and roll
Sir Daniel:hall of fame.
Sir Daniel:And he crossed over a lot of genres.
Sir Daniel:He did gospel rock, you name it.
Sir Daniel:He did it.
Sir Daniel:And we can't forget that.
Sir Daniel:Ahmet Ertegun award recipient is going to the black godfather himself.
Sir Daniel:Clarence avant, if you deserved, if you haven't, if you don't know
Sir Daniel:who Clarence avant is, please look up the movie on Netflix.
Sir Daniel:Uh, the black godfather.
Sir Daniel:It is a totally amazing, I think, uh, adult, um, adult Netflix.
Sir Daniel:So, um, for you to check out a documentary so that you can get, um, And, you know,
Sir Daniel:inducted and brought up on who Clarence is because a lot of people's careers he's
Sir Daniel:responsible for putting in the morning.
Sir Daniel:Absolutely.
Sir Daniel:And thank you, Nikki darlin.
Sir Daniel:We see you.
Sir Daniel:Thank you for joining us.
Jay Ray:Thank you so much.
Jay Ray:That's my cousin.
Jay Ray:Thank you.
Jay Ray:Thank you.
Sir Daniel:What our cousin?
Sir Daniel:Oh, birthdays almost forgot.
Sir Daniel:Almost forgot the queen.
Sir Daniel:You see this red over here or over me?
Sir Daniel:Yes.
Sir Daniel:Oh, Saturday is the Queen's birthday.
Sir Daniel:Janet Jackson.
Sir Daniel:You're absolutely
Jay Ray:right.
Jay Ray:Oh my God.
Sir Daniel:How could I even forget?
Sir Daniel:How could I get that?
Sir Daniel:Listen, Janet Jackson is responsible for a lot of, a lot of the
Sir Daniel:women that we see performing.
Sir Daniel:Now, the big girls that are running things.
Sir Daniel:Janet Jackson is there inspiration
Jay Ray:at point blank period and, and Janet musically.
Jay Ray:And we don't talk about this a lot, and this is not, we got so much to
Jay Ray:cover, but I want to say this really quickly, um, Janet Jackson, musically
Jay Ray:is just some of the best melodies and vocal harmonies, but you can play them.
Jay Ray:Janet Jackson records go back and played up Janie's extra records and
Jay Ray:listen to Janet harmonize over Janet,
Sir Daniel:which when you think about it back then when they
Sir Daniel:were running everything on tape.
Sir Daniel:And not did not run a bit through the co the laptop.
Sir Daniel:They were running everything on tape.
Sir Daniel:So if you messed up, you had to start it all over again.
Sir Daniel:She did that harmonizing to herself.
Sir Daniel:Boom.
Sir Daniel:So everybody that has something to say about Janet Jackson, singing abilities.
Sir Daniel:Come on, you might want to, you got
Jay Ray:questions, you got questions.
Jay Ray:And, and I think it was Jimmy jam who went on record and was like two of my
Jay Ray:favorite background singers of all time, uh, uh, Ralph Tresvant and Janet J.
Jay Ray:Well, because when you think about route Trezor and the same thing, like Ralph
Jay Ray:is will rod will ride his own melody.
Sir Daniel:Absolutely.
Sir Daniel:Absolutely.
Sir Daniel:So I said that to say, you know, again, Jan has paved the way for
Sir Daniel:a lot of women in this industry.
Sir Daniel:Um, whether it's a solo artist or groups, and that leads us to our
Sir Daniel:major topic today, we, it was all over the news over the weekend.
Sir Daniel:People are still talking about it.
Sir Daniel:Now we're going to talk about the verses battle SWV versus escape.
Sir Daniel:I'm not going to call it a battle like everybody else.
Sir Daniel:I call it a celebration.
Sir Daniel:It was, it looked beautiful aesthetically.
Sir Daniel:Well, the one thing that I was wondering about was the sound, there was some
Sir Daniel:issues with the sound going in and out cause we were getting, um, a lot
Sir Daniel:of what was being played in the, in the theater and not being piped in.
Sir Daniel:And I don't want to get too technical, but it makes a big difference.
Sir Daniel:Cause if you heard what you heard, the, the Christmas and the quality
Sir Daniel:of what, when the DJs were playing and we're going to get to that.
Sir Daniel:And a second with the DJs were playing versus when the young ladies were
Sir Daniel:singing, you could tell there was a difference, but other than that,
Sir Daniel:I enjoyed it now really quickly.
Sir Daniel:What's been your favorite verses, um, performances so far.
Sir Daniel:Oh, that's a
Jay Ray:good one.
Jay Ray:Um, favorite versus favorite versus favorite versus.
Jay Ray:Actually I really, really liked, um, the Gladys and Patty.
Jay Ray:It made me feel really good.
Jay Ray:I, in fact, I'm not, I might do this now.
Jay Ray:I don't know if you want me to do this now, but this
Jay Ray:verses felt really good to me.
Jay Ray:It did.
Jay Ray:So I was weird and this is my soap box.
Jay Ray:This is, this is where I was weird about reading the social.
Jay Ray:After well, one, I don't typically participate in the watching of stuff.
Jay Ray:I think, you know this about me.
Jay Ray:I'm not good with like Fanny stuff.
Jay Ray:That's like happening in the moment.
Jay Ray:I, because one, I can't pay attention to what you type in and then watch the thing.
Jay Ray:And I just, I want to watch it when I want to watch it.
Jay Ray:So I watched it after.
Jay Ray:Gotcha.
Jay Ray:I thoroughly one, I think there's two things.
Jay Ray:There's two notes.
Jay Ray:I want to make.
Jay Ray:That people project, what they feel about.
Jay Ray:Taj and Lee Lee's contribution to SWV on to Coco, but Coco wasn't giving that.
Jay Ray:I didn't, I'm like, yo, we're seeing a thing that I, yeah, like she talked
Jay Ray:about, Hey, I was off a little bit.
Jay Ray:Cause some stuff happened personally, but as I was watching back the show, I
Jay Ray:didn't feel like I wasn't seeing that.
Jay Ray:And what I was watching.
Jay Ray:Um, different groups with different styles of different personalities, do a thing.
Jay Ray:The other thing that I loved about watching it was the
Jay Ray:comradery of escape one.
Jay Ray:Came to play.
Jay Ray:Like they came, they came to play.
Jay Ray:I will love watching that they did.
Jay Ray:And I loved watching Taj B Taj.
Jay Ray:And, and what I loved is you got a chance to see what I think.
Jay Ray:If people wanted to see it, they got a chance to see what
Jay Ray:makes SWV work on that stage.
Sir Daniel:Absolutely.
Sir Daniel:Everything you said is correct.
Sir Daniel:Um, Shout out to again, cut me and cousin, Nikki.
Sir Daniel:We right here as far as my favorite, um, versus so far the Isley
Sir Daniel:brothers, death, Isley brothers and earth, wind and fire was.
Sir Daniel:It w it didn't even feel like four hours.
Sir Daniel:And the fact that we sat through four hours of it was amazing.
Sir Daniel:So, you know, there was a reason why we sat through that.
Sir Daniel:Um, I also enjoyed the Patty and Gladys, especially, especially when Dion came out.
Sir Daniel:That was so classic.
Sir Daniel:Chef's kiss.
Sir Daniel:Definitely dope.
Sir Daniel:But, um, yeah, I think those are my favorites.
Sir Daniel:I agree with what you were saying.
Sir Daniel:Um, we like to project, um, A lot of what we're feeling.
Sir Daniel:I do like watching these events with Twitter as a family, as we like to call it
Sir Daniel:black Twitter, because it's kind of fun.
Sir Daniel:And a lot of people, you know, everybody becomes an ANR and a, and a, and a
Sir Daniel:producer when they're watching the show, but it was a really great show.
Sir Daniel:One of the things that I really appreciated.
Sir Daniel:Where the DJ's a lot of people had hot takes about a one, but as somebody
Sir Daniel:that understands, you know, deejaying is not just playing records, but,
Sir Daniel:um, sharing energy, I get why age every, a one was hype and it, it
Sir Daniel:helped to me, it really did help.
Sir Daniel:And I really appreciated him.
Sir Daniel:Now.
Sir Daniel:I want to give a shout.
Sir Daniel:So my brother, Darryl, train them.
Sir Daniel:And I want you all to give him a shout out, give us a shout out because he and
Sir Daniel:I single-handedly manifested spindarella being on that stage where SWV, I'm
Sir Daniel:saying I'm taking the credit right now.
Sir Daniel:We set it in his living room.
Sir Daniel:We were saying he was talking about, um, who's going to be the DJ for the verses.
Sir Daniel:And we both looked at each other.
Sir Daniel:SWV.
Sir Daniel:And we thought it was, and we, I mean, we said both said, spinner Rella for SWV.
Sir Daniel:And we both started laughing because of the, you know, there's a little shady
Sir Daniel:illness, um, in there because, so in purple of course, you know, infamously,
Sir Daniel:uh, had a falling out with Cinderella, but they were also on a reality show with SWV.
Sir Daniel:So we were just like, Ooh, that'd be so juicy.
Sir Daniel:And.
Sir Daniel:I'm a salt and pepper stand from 1985 trust.
Sir Daniel:I love salt and pepper, but it was good.
Sir Daniel:Seeing spinner relegate, absolutely get her props and people loving her,
Sir Daniel:um, her set and just loving the fact that she was there and getting some
Sir Daniel:shine because correct me if I'm wrong.
Sir Daniel:Um, I think she may have so far be the only woman DJ.
Sir Daniel:To spin a versus
Jay Ray:I believe.
Jay Ray:And, and, and in all fairness, I haven't seen all of them on
Jay Ray:purpose, but I think you're right.
Jay Ray:I have not.
Jay Ray:Wow.
Jay Ray:Shout out to spin, shout out, suspended, relay, and shout out
Jay Ray:to both, um, SWV and escape.
Jay Ray:I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Jay Ray:I will say my, my interesting thing about versus.
Jay Ray:Baby.
Jay Ray:I'm a, I'm a get in and get out kind of guy.
Jay Ray:Like I'm a gimme, gimme, gimme your top five SWV.
Jay Ray:Give me your top five escape.
Jay Ray:Perform the hell out of it and send me home.
Jay Ray:You know what I'm saying?
Jay Ray:But baby, when that's, when that hour and a half hit, I be like,
Jay Ray:man, oh man, I am exhausted now.
Sir Daniel:Well, you know what it is, right?
Sir Daniel:We're the uncles we're like, look, Hey, y'all let's, let's get it.
Jay Ray:Let's get this going.
Sir Daniel:So I was seeing a lot of comments.
Sir Daniel:A lot of people had a lot of energy around.
Sir Daniel:People doing solo cuts, people doing performing songs that hit
Sir Daniel:they'd written for other people.
Sir Daniel:I have absolutely no issue with that whatsoever.
Jay Ray:Zero, zero.
Jay Ray:Like you like candy dropping.
Jay Ray:You, you think I'm not perfect.
Jay Ray:One it's Atlanta's ale.
Jay Ray:I was like, Hmm.
Jay Ray:That should happen.
Jay Ray:I think, you know, folks, um, the other thing, these rigid rules or
Jay Ray:these rigid parameters, I think that people put around these things
Jay Ray:one, I think it makes it less fun.
Jay Ray:Um, but also Stan culture is weird.
Jay Ray:Y'all like, that is weird.
Jay Ray:Where in fairness, um, I had an idea of the way I thought that
Jay Ray:this verses would go and it didn't go the way that I thought.
Jay Ray:Okay.
Jay Ray:Um, but watching the way folks were interacting with each other after
Jay Ray:it happened, it was just, even before it happened was just like,
Sir Daniel:And I think if, you know, if you're in a certain age group, I
Sir Daniel:would imagine, yes, regionally, we've got a group straight out of New York, or
Sir Daniel:we got a grew straight out of Atlanta.
Sir Daniel:So yes, there was going to be some regional competition, which as
Sir Daniel:you know, our group in New York been living in Atlanta for years.
Sir Daniel:So I claim.
Sir Daniel:I claim both of them.
Sir Daniel:I love them equally.
Sir Daniel:I, you know, can we also talk about the feeling you get when you
Sir Daniel:hear a remix from escape or SWV?
Sir Daniel:Let me, let me share this story real quick.
Sir Daniel:So we're going to talk about remixes.
Sir Daniel:Oh, let's talk about this.
Sir Daniel:Um, and I'm an age myself and I don't care SWV.
Sir Daniel:His debut album is about time came out in 19 90, 1 91 92.
Sir Daniel:Okay.
Sir Daniel:So 92.
Sir Daniel:So.
Sir Daniel:I was a junior in high school.
Sir Daniel:I was in 11th grade.
Sir Daniel:So we had right here, the original version come out.
Sir Daniel:Original
Jay Ray:version was the first single y'all
Sir Daniel:first single.
Sir Daniel:Then we had I'm so NCU.
Sir Daniel:Then we had downtown fast forward to my senior year.
Sir Daniel:My prom, what?
Sir Daniel:This is a whole nine.
Sir Daniel:This is 1993.
Sir Daniel:This is May, 1993.
Sir Daniel:Shout out to all the graduates, um, for this year.
Sir Daniel:This is May, 1993.
Sir Daniel:We're at the Atlanta botanical gardens.
Sir Daniel:And what is our prom song?
Sir Daniel:Our slow song of the night, of course week, which is their ultimate showstopper.
Sir Daniel:Yep.
Sir Daniel:Now.
Sir Daniel:Fast forward to 1995.
Sir Daniel:We're at this point, I have dropped out.
Sir Daniel:I've dropped out of Georgia state university.
Sir Daniel:Um, I'm working at 18 T I I've tried to start some type of rap career.
Sir Daniel:There's a whole lot of foolishness.
Sir Daniel:I guess what was playing on the radio and on the videos, the all-star remix of
Sir Daniel:anything SWV featuring the Wu Tang clan,
Sir Daniel:we're talking 92 to 95, 1 album.
Sir Daniel:And all of that is thanks to really great remixes.
Jay Ray:Yup.
Jay Ray:Yup.
Jay Ray:And Lely talked about that and the verses as well, talking about the
Jay Ray:reason behind, you know, the producers really wanting to do, you know,
Jay Ray:versions that were hit different markets and really trying to think
Jay Ray:about and getting other people involved.
Jay Ray:You know, you get Teddy Riley involved, uh, you know, for rail
Jay Ray:before we knew who for rail was, you know what I'm saying in the mix.
Jay Ray:So really thinking through the beauty of.
Jay Ray:One that album, uh, you have right here as the first single, and then they rerelease
Jay Ray:it remix and it becomes the biggest single at that moment that they had
Sir Daniel:released from the big really soundtrack
Jay Ray:from the big Willie soundtrack.
Jay Ray:And then, so we have soundtracks.
Jay Ray:So we got sound because even, um, so it was funny.
Jay Ray:So there's a, there's a note in there where, um, Canada.
Jay Ray:It was like, oh, the above the rim soundtrack, but actually
Jay Ray:that song was on another
Sir Daniel:park basketball movies.
Jay Ray:And so thinking about one.
Jay Ray:I miss records.
Jay Ray:I miss records that have like a life that kind of grow.
Jay Ray:Um, I'm just, I miss remixes a lot, like a lie.
Sir Daniel:Well, pause.
Sir Daniel:Let's not forget, not for nothing.
Sir Daniel:Let's not leave escape out of the conversation around mixes because Jermaine
Sir Daniel:Dupri, I'm going to give him his props.
Sir Daniel:No later for what he was saying about the women MCs of today are, you know,
Sir Daniel:that was kind of a hot take on his part.
Sir Daniel:But when we want to talk about giving out props for remixes and
Sir Daniel:allowing records to breathe and just giving a hip hop sensibility.
Sir Daniel:So Mariah Carey, who would have, who would have ever thought to put
Sir Daniel:the bread and the Mariah Carey on a record together, but Jermaine.
Jay Ray:Baby like Mariah, first of all, Mariah and Jermaine.
Jay Ray:And I posted this once.
Jay Ray:I think I put up sweetheart and I was like, Mariah Carey, Jermaine, Dupri.
Jay Ray:We're just a match made in heaven that, and what I loved about it, and I
Jay Ray:think this was the thing and what came across one with the SWV songs and the
Jay Ray:remixes and the escape songs and the remixes and all these, the Mariah stuff.
Jay Ray:Folks we're enjoying each other and trusting that, remember
Jay Ray:the Mariah at the top of, uh, I think it was the honey remix.
Jay Ray:If Jermaine likes it, that the bread is a, he, do you know what I'm saying?
Jay Ray:It's
Sir Daniel:like, there you go.
Sir Daniel:There you go.
Sir Daniel:And it's, it's a history and.
Sir Daniel:Well, this is new to y'all, but Jay ran, I've talked about this.
Sir Daniel:There's an intertwining of when we're talking about Jermaine, Dupri
Sir Daniel:and music that was coming out of Atlanta in the early to mid nineties,
Sir Daniel:there's the intertwine between Jermaine Dupri and, and say Diddy.
Sir Daniel:Definitely, definitely Diddy.
Sir Daniel:They produce for each others, artists, they submitted remixes
Sir Daniel:for each other's artists.
Sir Daniel:They had features from each other's artists on each other's labels.
Sir Daniel:It was just this cross connection going on between.
Sir Daniel:So-so definitely bad boy.
Sir Daniel:So they truly were running things in the nineties.
Sir Daniel:And I think that's why you still have, you can have an appreciation.
Sir Daniel:Yeah.
Sir Daniel:In every region for both of these groups.
Sir Daniel:So I think that was the, the loveliness that came out of this versus, and,
Sir Daniel:um, oh, it just came to my mind.
Sir Daniel:Another, um, another verses that are thoroughly enjoyed
Sir Daniel:was the DMX and Snoop Dogg.
Sir Daniel:So resting rest in peace to DMX.
Sir Daniel:That was a fun one.
Sir Daniel:That was a lot of fun.
Sir Daniel:Definitely.
Sir Daniel:I gotta, I got
Jay Ray:to go back and watch.
Jay Ray:That was one of the ones I haven't seen, but I will go back to that one out.
Sir Daniel:And so, and I got to give it to also got to give it to
Sir Daniel:Jermaine Dupri for his openness, to working with women artists as well.
Sir Daniel:Because if let's talk about it, who was Jermaine?
Sir Daniel:Depree's very first group.
Jay Ray:Ah, so was it sometimes leather?
Sir Daniel:Boom.
Sir Daniel:There you go.
Jay Ray:You know what I'm saying?
Jay Ray:I'm going to pull out some, so Tom's leather up in here.
Jay Ray:I got it over here.
Sir Daniel:I got it soon.
Sir Daniel:And you know that and you know me.
Sir Daniel:And so I, that's another thing about this versus I think this is might've been the
Sir Daniel:LAR the, no, we had brand new Monica.
Sir Daniel:We had, that was used to SWV and escape.
Sir Daniel:I liked, I just liked seeing these women get their props.
Sir Daniel:Cause a lot of times when we're having these conversations
Sir Daniel:around music, a lot of the times.
Sir Daniel:The women get left out or they have to, they create these
Sir Daniel:lists specifically for women.
Sir Daniel:And then it's a very small and curated lists.
Sir Daniel:Like there's not other people that exist.
Sir Daniel:You know, if you, you always talk about when people start talking about
Sir Daniel:their top five, Dead or alive MCs.
Sir Daniel:It's always, it's always the same and nobody ever throws in sometimes, you
Sir Daniel:know, they might say, okay, well, what about the women literally be like an
Sir Daniel:afterthought afterthought and it's stuff like that is the reason why.
Sir Daniel:I'm going to be bringing back my open, my life mixed.
Sir Daniel:So it's rebranded.
Sir Daniel:It's called wild girl Wednesdays.
Jay Ray:Wow.
Jay Ray:Girl.
Jay Ray:There's days
Sir Daniel:where I play nothing, but the dolls I'm talking about any and
Sir Daniel:every woman you can think of, um, every genre we talking it'll be spanning
Sir Daniel:throughout different generations.
Sir Daniel:So just keep your eyes open for that.
Sir Daniel:That's going to be coming soon.
Sir Daniel:Um, So the restream audience as well.
Sir Daniel:So I'm excited about that.
Sir Daniel:It's just been a really great week.
Sir Daniel:Yes,
Jay Ray:USIC wise.
Jay Ray:It has.
Jay Ray:Um, and we're going to talk about some stuff that we're loving, but.
Jay Ray:Well, I think the beautiful thing about music is that one it's always there for
Jay Ray:us, you know, with whatever we are going through in particular, when we're going
Jay Ray:through something difficult, right.
Jay Ray:We can always put on a song.
Jay Ray:And I'm actually curious for those folks that are listening or
Jay Ray:watching, what are some of, what were some of your favorite songs?
Jay Ray:That got played during the verses between SWV and escape.
Jay Ray:I'm really curious to know what songs y'all dig, but, um,
Jay Ray:yeah, no really good musical.
Sir Daniel:Absolutely.
Sir Daniel:And I think there was something that you wanted to share.
Sir Daniel:I'll wait, let me do this.
Sir Daniel:Let me tell y'all something about this guy.
Sir Daniel:What this weight that, yeah, this guy right here.
Sir Daniel:So.
Sir Daniel:If you want to talk about being an audio file or somebody that stores
Sir Daniel:information, sometimes I will just look at him and be like, why do you know that?
Sir Daniel:Why, why do you know that?
Sir Daniel:Okay, so go ahead.
Sir Daniel:Oh,
Jay Ray:school us.
Jay Ray:I love.
Jay Ray:Random facts.
Jay Ray:And so when we were sitting down for this show, I'm going to make this really quick.
Jay Ray:In fact, hold on, I gotta, I gotta pull up my thing cause I gotta,
Jay Ray:there's something I need to read.
Jay Ray:Okay.
Jay Ray:But I'm, we're going to stay in the SWV bag for a moment.
Jay Ray:All right.
Jay Ray:So 1993, um, SWV.
Jay Ray:Um, so couple of things happened so on July 10th, 1999, Um, weak hit number one.
Jay Ray:Um, so now this is their first official number one.
Jay Ray:So I'm so into you was at the top 10 week hits number one and it
Jay Ray:stays in number one for two weeks.
Jay Ray:So this is July 10th week, 1993.
Jay Ray:We kids number one around that same time, July two.
Jay Ray:As WB drops the right here, remix the human nature remix, right?
Jay Ray:Same day.
Jay Ray:So we, a number one new singles dropping.
Jay Ray:Right.
Jay Ray:We have been, we could we've dropped in like April, so, you
Jay Ray:know, stuff traveled, you know, it take, it took a minute that week.
Jay Ray:So on July 14th, SWV.
Jay Ray:So they happen to be on the summer Fest.
Jay Ray:Um, and that week, so on July 14th, this is four days after
Jay Ray:their number once a week.
Jay Ray:It's number one, they are in Washington, DC right here.
Jay Ray:Hasn't blown up yet.
Jay Ray:It's going to become their biggest single and one of the biggest singles
Jay Ray:of the year, but it hasn't happened yet.
Jay Ray:So July 14th, SWV is in Washington, DC performing at Summerfest.
Jay Ray:And I want to read what this, this is a funny quote.
Jay Ray:So I want to read this.
Jay Ray:This is from the Washington.
Jay Ray:SWV, AKA sisters with voices was especially impressive working for
Jay Ray:the first time with a band instead of with recorded rhythm tracks
Jay Ray:and ultimate alternately sounding girlish Lee, in a sense on the
Jay Ray:number one hit week and on I'm.
Jay Ray:So into you sexually aggressive on the highly suggestive, downtown and
Jay Ray:gospel bread on just about everything.
Jay Ray:Right.
Jay Ray:Hold on his lessons with the help of three dancers who specialized in a
Jay Ray:fragrantly exotic brand of aerobics, the trio managed to keep the crowd dancing
Jay Ray:and singing for the duration of the set.
Jay Ray:So
Jay Ray:this is the way people would write about black.
Jay Ray:At that time.
Jay Ray:Right.
Jay Ray:Uh, wonder why, right.
Jay Ray:So this is, so this is the, this is the time and place that we're in.
Jay Ray:And I wanted to set this because here's, what's interesting
Jay Ray:is not the interesting part.
Jay Ray:Here's what's interesting about this night.
Jay Ray:Um, so on this summer Fest tour show, this show specifically is Jade H tile.
Jay Ray:Wow.
Jay Ray:Jade, H town silk shop.
Jay Ray:And SWV.
Jay Ray:Wow.
Jay Ray:So this ain't it yet.
Jay Ray:Here it is.
Jay Ray:Summerfest actually had two headlining acts that did not perform on this show.
Jay Ray:Those two headlining acts were LL cool.
Jay Ray:J who is an icon by 1993.
Jay Ray:This is after mama said, knock you out.
Jay Ray:He was eight years into his celebrity.
Jay Ray:He is a bonafide superstar, mellow.
Jay Ray:Movie star LL.
Jay Ray:Cool.
Jay Ray:J is a star.
Jay Ray:So LL cool.
Jay Ray:J's a headliner naughty by nature is the other group.
Jay Ray:So here's what happened.
Jay Ray:Here's what
Sir Daniel:happened.
Sir Daniel:Go ahead.
Sir Daniel:Finish
Jay Ray:where this show was being performed in Washington DC at the
Jay Ray:convention center wrap was bang.
Sir Daniel:Wow.
Sir Daniel:Your
Jay Ray:two biggest stars at that moment.
Jay Ray:So naughty by nature is like hip hop array is like a patrol out by then.
Jay Ray:Absolutely.
Jay Ray:They are literally like cashing checks left and right.
Jay Ray:Yeah.
Jay Ray:Because 1993 was the second album and the first record had already
Jay Ray:blown up and then they got the second record, which went crazy.
Jay Ray:Ray was outta there, outta here.
Jay Ray:And you got LL cool J on the same ticket.
Jay Ray:Neither one of them could perform y'all because at that moment in hip,
Jay Ray:I forgot about this time in hip hop, because hip hop is now the culture.
Sir Daniel:Yup.
Sir Daniel:And we had C Delores Tucker.
Sir Daniel:What was the Reverend that was running over CDs and albums.
Jay Ray:Exactly.
Jay Ray:You got tipper gore out there.
Jay Ray:Like we got to put stuff,
Sir Daniel:stickers, sticker on the albums.
Sir Daniel:Yes.
Jay Ray:That was tipper gore.
Jay Ray:Al Gore's wife.
Jay Ray:Tipper gore was, that was, that was who led that effort.
Jay Ray:So.
Jay Ray:What was so interesting is you have one SWV who are just blowing up.
Jay Ray:They are at the beginning of January.
Jay Ray:I'm so into you comes out and that's their big, that's their big hit, you know, then
Jay Ray:we comes and it becomes their vigor and they're about to have their biggest one.
Jay Ray:So SWV is at the beginning of their stardom, and then you have LL cool J who's
Jay Ray:a veteran by then and naughty by nature.
Jay Ray:So all these people and all Jane and all these folks.
Jay Ray:On this tour, but the rappers can't play because rap band
Sir Daniel:is banned in DC of all places, Washington, DC, the
Sir Daniel:blackest city in the nation.
Sir Daniel:You know, what else was
Jay Ray:banned now that you said that.
Jay Ray:Gogo was also banned Washington DC's own Gogo was banned at the convention center.
Jay Ray:You couldn't play rap music there and you couldn't play go-go there.
Jay Ray:So you want to talk about how racism man, how racism shows up and how it manifests.
Jay Ray:And people will say it was because of the elements and it was because of this.
Jay Ray:I hear all of that, but what I also hear is y'all don't want black.
Jay Ray:Uh, doing that in here.
Sir Daniel:Listen.
Sir Daniel:Wow.
Sir Daniel:Thank you for that.
Sir Daniel:First of all, because we, I think people needed to know that and to realize how
Sir Daniel:life is singular and, um, how things are just repeating themselves, because go
Sir Daniel:again is it was being endangered by the elements in DC that was, um, attacking
Sir Daniel:DC culture was attacking go-go music and that all stems from white supremacy.
Sir Daniel:So let's just put that out there.
Sir Daniel:So thank you for that.
Sir Daniel:I don't.
Sir Daniel:I still don't know why you know that, but thank you for knowing that we need to sit
Sir Daniel:here, that we all needed to hear that.
Sir Daniel:So thank you.
Sir Daniel:You're welcome.
Sir Daniel:Um, yeah, just thinking back about, you know, what moments like that.
Sir Daniel:If we had social media back then, I can only imagine.
Sir Daniel:The, the tweets black Twitter would have been on fire.
Jay Ray:Lost it.
Jay Ray:Cause people would've showed up at that show.
Jay Ray:Oh, not showing up because it was, it was reported ahead of time.
Jay Ray:So you can actually y'all can pull these pieces from the Washington post archive.
Jay Ray:Uh, cause there were two pieces, one leading up to it saying
Jay Ray:L ain't going to be there.
Jay Ray:And the promoter was like, even if they're promoting.
Jay Ray:I was like, even if they did allow rap, I wasn't going to let the naughty
Jay Ray:by the nature and LL performing, even though I like L L he can
Jay Ray:perform he, no, because the element that would come, I don't want it.
Jay Ray:My stuff
Sir Daniel:black suitor would have canceled, found out who their promoter
Sir Daniel:was and canceled him and just put them completely on blast online.
Sir Daniel:But, um, This week was no different on black Twitter at all.
Sir Daniel:Social, just social media period.
Sir Daniel:Social media has been, you know, it does a lot for music.
Sir Daniel:It's a, it's a double-edged swore sword.
Sir Daniel:And so yeah, this weekend, social media, like very, why are we like this?
Sir Daniel:Why are we like this?
Sir Daniel:Okay.
Sir Daniel:So this is, I don't even know how this got.
Sir Daniel:Yes, this is a music podcast, visual podcast, but.
Sir Daniel:You guys made this part of our part.
Sir Daniel:So if you've been living under a rock, you've heard the news, the breaking
Sir Daniel:news, that Porsha Williams granddaughter or great-granddaughter granddaughter
Sir Daniel:of Hosea Williams, civil rights icon.
Sir Daniel:And star real Housewives, just completely shattered.
Sir Daniel:Twitter, broke the internet when it was announced that she is not involved
Sir Daniel:with a once married man to her friend, a man who's married a friend because
Sir Daniel:she saying we will never forget
Jay Ray:all of that.
Jay Ray:So, yeah.
Sir Daniel:So in record time, you guys look at what you did shomes
Sir Daniel:area and look at what you did.
Sir Daniel:Look what you guys put in.
Sir Daniel:Chat her up posted this.
Sir Daniel:There is a Porsche's current playlist running around and I'm pretty certain
Sir Daniel:this on all the platforms right now, but it's got all the sidekick anthems on
Sir Daniel:there from SWV and escape because they gave us a lot of side chick anthems,
Sir Daniel:including you and my little secret.
Sir Daniel:Then there's the classic.
Sir Daniel:Um, as we
Jay Ray:lay, as we lay Shirley Murdock from Dayton, Ohio,
Sir Daniel:you know what I'm saying?
Sir Daniel:And, um, uh, let me come to you, woman to woman.
Jay Ray:Come on, man.
Sir Daniel:Come on army.
Sir Daniel:Listen, Shirley Brown, all of that stuff.
Sir Daniel:You guys, why are we like this?
Jay Ray:I listen.
Jay Ray:I here's what I love.
Jay Ray:Here's what I love about us.
Jay Ray:And I'm talking about black culture, black people, period.
Jay Ray:Specifically us.
Jay Ray:What I love is we knew this about ourselves before there was black
Jay Ray:Twitter, but black Twitter just isn't.
Jay Ray:This is why this is why we were able, this is why we are able to get through
Jay Ray:because baby, baby, we is on it.
Jay Ray:Like on it, baby.
Jay Ray:We got a playlist for you for Porsche,
Sir Daniel:but it's a slapping playlist too, though.
Sir Daniel:It's got some bops on there.
Sir Daniel:Listen.
Sir Daniel:I could probably, yeah, I've listened to a lot of those songs anyway.
Sir Daniel:And so yeah, you guys never changed.
Sir Daniel:That's all I'm going to say, please don't ever change and make sure you
Sir Daniel:come and join us each and every week for, um, for two points, because
Sir Daniel:we're going to have fun conversations just like this, but before we go,
Sir Daniel:Jerry, I need you to put me on, man.
Sir Daniel:I need you to.
Sir Daniel:I
Jay Ray:got you.
Jay Ray:I got you.
Jay Ray:I got you.
Jay Ray:So y'all this week.
Jay Ray:So I joined a record club, shout out, shout out to rainbow
Jay Ray:records in Newark Delaware.
Jay Ray:Um, there's a Newark Delaware and a Newark New Jersey.
Jay Ray:They are two very different places.
Jay Ray:Let's be very clear about that.
Jay Ray:So, Down in Newark Delaware, rainbow records are part of this record clubs.
Jay Ray:So I got three records in the mail and, um, it's really two, but they
Jay Ray:gave me a bonus, which was fun.
Jay Ray:And one of, and one of the records that was in there was
Jay Ray:from Y know, any of the groups.
Jay Ray:One of them was from, um, this group called child.
Jay Ray:And it would be the name of the album was my people.
Jay Ray:I was living for the cover.
Jay Ray:So the cover is right.
Jay Ray:Bring it over.
Jay Ray:Hold
Sir Daniel:on.
Sir Daniel:Oh, no problem.
Sir Daniel:Hey, what's up Kipper.
Sir Daniel:Listen, I know you love it too.
Sir Daniel:Shout out to Kipper Jones.
Sir Daniel:We need to get Kipper on here because it needs to be on here, bro.
Sir Daniel:I mean, Kipper is a walking encyclopedia in history book himself.
Sir Daniel:Listen, this is giving y'all.
Sir Daniel:He's giving y'all some of your favorite bops.
Jay Ray:He's giving you some of your favorite
Sir Daniel:by your favorites.
Sir Daniel:Fav, let's be clear about that.
Jay Ray:So this, um, shall we a Chihuahua?
Jay Ray:Um, uh, Hey, can recovers of rehearsal, but he wouldn't shove it.
Jay Ray:I love it.
Jay Ray:So, um, my people this record, here's what I love.
Jay Ray:Um, one it's new Orleans second line.
Jay Ray:Okay.
Jay Ray:Um, the first records of new Orleans, new Orleans, second
Jay Ray:line music that I've had that.
Jay Ray:Officially owned.
Jay Ray:Like I've had songs on other stuff, but this is like the first record
Jay Ray:that I've owned and it's so good.
Jay Ray:Like y'all, it feels in this time and when it's a colored vinyl, which I thought
Jay Ray:was fun, but it's like a Mardi Gras situation that you can't even see it.
Jay Ray:Like, it's hard to know.
Jay Ray:But, um, it's, it's an amazing record.
Jay Ray:I highly recommend this.
Jay Ray:It feels really good.
Jay Ray:It is black culture.
Jay Ray:It is new Orleans and, um, highly recommend this.
Jay Ray:So DJ, sir, Daniel get chihuahuas my people.
Jay Ray:And so DJ, sir, Daniel says, I put you on, you gotta put me on.
Sir Daniel:Okay.
Sir Daniel:So, and mind you, what we're going to do is, um, you're going to be able to
Sir Daniel:see everything that we talk about, um, as far as what we put you on to where
Sir Daniel:we put each other onto, we're going to post a video or link to the music
Sir Daniel:so that you can have access to it.
Sir Daniel:So, you know, I'm, I like old style.
Sir Daniel:I like classics, right?
Sir Daniel:And I don't even know how I even got on this kick for this particular record.
Sir Daniel:I think I was at a record store in Clarkston and I found the
Sir Daniel:album of this particular artist.
Sir Daniel:And I was like, you know what I remember, this is, this was a real,
Sir Daniel:this was a slap, this, this was a bomb.
Sir Daniel:And so I said, you know, I'm going to get this.
Sir Daniel:I got it home.
Sir Daniel:I liked the album version, but I knew that there was an extended version
Sir Daniel:that I want to play during a set.
Sir Daniel:So I went on Discogs and I found the single, the 12 inch.
Sir Daniel:I found out that the person, the, the distributor that had it was a
Sir Daniel:local, um, had a local store here.
Sir Daniel:So I said, oh, bump that shipping and handling, I'm going down.
Sir Daniel:I'm going down to the store and pick this up today because I have to have this.
Sir Daniel:And I'm really, as you can see, I'm really bad.
Sir Daniel:Like if I see some vinyl that I have to, I'm going to get it
Sir Daniel:right then and there anyway.
Sir Daniel:So, yeah, our guy dressing like, yup.
Sir Daniel:I'm boxing.
Sir Daniel:You get me.
Sir Daniel:This is going, oh, this, this next set is going to slack.
Sir Daniel:It's going to, it's going to give everybody the feels.
Sir Daniel:It's going to have people.
Sir Daniel:It's going to have people twirling, twirling, twirling.
Sir Daniel:You are going to twirl when you hear this record.
Sir Daniel:Right.
Sir Daniel:So I get down.
Sir Daniel:Mask on and everything.
Sir Daniel:I'll knock.
Sir Daniel:I goes through the door and before I can even open the door,
Sir Daniel:there's a big sign on there.
Sir Daniel:There are not open to public shopping.
Sir Daniel:You have to call and order ahead and or go online and make your order.
Sir Daniel:I said, you know what, dude, you ain't said nothing about a word.
Sir Daniel:I'm calling the number as I'm walking back to the, to the car, Cause he need
Jay Ray:record y'all
Sir Daniel:cause I need this record.
Sir Daniel:I gotta have it.
Sir Daniel:So I'm calling in and the guy answers the phone and he, you know, we go
Sir Daniel:through the credit card information.
Sir Daniel:It's really an, this piece of vinyl is Super.
Sir Daniel:cheap But it, but it means a lot.
Jay Ray:Right?
Sir Daniel:So to me, right.
Sir Daniel:So I'm like, I would've paid such and such for it, but I'm going to
Sir Daniel:pay these little, you know, these couple dollars here for this record.
Sir Daniel:So he's about to put he said uhhh Wait, Hey, what'd you say?
Sir Daniel:Talking to somebody in the background.
Sir Daniel:Oh, oh, I'm sorry, sir. It looks, it looks like there's been a
Sir Daniel:mistake and we don't have it.
Sir Daniel:And I'm just, I'm sitting there in a car.
Sir Daniel:I wanted to say, do you guys know that I'm right outside your door right now?
Sir Daniel:I need this record, but I'm just like, you know what?
Sir Daniel:It's okay.
Sir Daniel:I'm going to, I'm just going to find it someplace else.
Sir Daniel:Do you know the record that ended?
Sir Daniel:Follow up.
Sir Daniel:I have found it and it is at another place here in the surrounding Metro area.
Sir Daniel:It's almost an hour away from where I live, but I am going to drive out there.
Sir Daniel:And the trip road trip is several records and it's, I'm getting
Sir Daniel:this record that they have.
Sir Daniel:Anyway, you guys, you probably gonna think I'm crazy.
Sir Daniel:When I tell you who this artist is, you may not even know when
Sir Daniel:I tell you who the artist is.
Sir Daniel:When I say it, the artist's name is
Sir Daniel:And the name of the song is fall down.
Sir Daniel:Now some of y'all are looking like who's right at the time when this record,
Sir Daniel:this record was popping in 86, it was really popping in the clubs Tremaine.
Sir Daniel:Is Tremaine Harkins
Sir Daniel:from the gospel dynasty, the Hawkins dynasty I'm talking to
Sir Daniel:like her brother is Edwin Hawkins.
Sir Daniel:Oh, happy day, harken.
Sir Daniel:Wow.
Sir Daniel:That Harkins,
Sir Daniel:if you have the opportunity and I'm going to put a link up to the song so you can
Sir Daniel:hear it and you will hear it on wild girl, Wednesdays at some point, this song.
Sir Daniel:Literally is joyful.
Sir Daniel:The message.
Sir Daniel:If you're not, if you're not a churchy person, I get it.
Sir Daniel:I'm not in, I'm not a churchy person, either.
Sir Daniel:The song don't Creech, it's got, it's definitely in the
Sir Daniel:lyrics, but it's not preachy.
Sir Daniel:Yeah.
Sir Daniel:Uh, it's definitely a disco club beat.
Sir Daniel:And it's amazing.
Sir Daniel:These producers that are created these records back then they
Sir Daniel:have their feet in both worlds.
Sir Daniel:Absolutely.
Sir Daniel:The secular world, and they had their feet in the, in the clubs, the Clark system.
Sir Daniel:The Clark sisters, biggest hit is what you brought the sunshine.
Sir Daniel:And
Sir Daniel:it was in the clubs.
Sir Daniel:There was clubs now, and it will go off.
Sir Daniel:So I just, I don't even know how I got on that rent, but Tremaine.
Sir Daniel:And if you're looking for it, do not put in Charmaine hockey.
Sir Daniel:It's just Tremaine.
Sir Daniel:I don't know.
Sir Daniel:And that may be something for me to look into.
Sir Daniel:I don't know if it was something strategically done to not turn off
Sir Daniel:new listeners because she might've been associated with gospel, but
Sir Daniel:she was just known as Tremaine.
Sir Daniel:And that Jay Ray is the song I'm putting you onto this.
Sir Daniel:Yeah.
Sir Daniel:Got it.
Sir Daniel:And listen, you're coming here today.
Sir Daniel:So you would appreciate, I wouldn't be surprised if you hear
Sir Daniel:this record over the weekend.
Sir Daniel:Mark.
Sir Daniel:My words, if I was a betting, man, I guarantee you one of those DJs,
Sir Daniel:Louie Vega, who else was playing?
Sir Daniel:Uh,
Jay Ray:I don't know.
Jay Ray:It's two other DJs.
Jay Ray:I don't know.
Jay Ray:I can't remember their names though, but listen.
Sir Daniel:It's a major house set.
Sir Daniel:I know that.
Sir Daniel:And though, and, and these records could be played in these sets.
Sir Daniel:That's why you can have a Kenny Bobi in today.
Sir Daniel:You can have a Ricky Diller, the new G drops something that's gospel, but the
Sir Daniel:DJs or we'll, we'll slap a beat under that and put it out there for people to dance.
Sir Daniel:But that's for another show.
Jay Ray:Ooh, we gotta talk about that.
Jay Ray:Cause that is, that's a whole thing.
Jay Ray:That's well, first of all, gospel house and club, it's, it's a
Jay Ray:thing y'all, it's a whole thing.
Jay Ray:And if you've never danced or if you've never danced to it, it's, it changes
Sir Daniel:things.
Sir Daniel:It really does.
Sir Daniel:It changes your perspective and it makes everything okay for that time for whatever
Sir Daniel:it is you're going through at that moment.
Sir Daniel:And that's what music does.
Sir Daniel:That's an absolutely listen, before we get out of here, I got to remind
Sir Daniel:people or we want your feedback.

Sir Daniel:Um, I did their remix changed the game.
Jay Ray:It literally did because, so it's funny.
Jay Ray:I'm thinking about what my favorite remix is, but that remix literally changed
Jay Ray:everything because remember, after that remit, Flavor and your ear came,
Jay Ray:which was literally, oh, wait a minute.
Jay Ray:The flavor in your ear.
Jay Ray:Come first.
Jay Ray:I can't remember that.
Jay Ray:It might, it was around the same
Sir Daniel:time, you know?
Sir Daniel:So flavoring your air came first because I want to be down with a 95.
Jay Ray:Exactly.
Jay Ray:Yeah.
Sir Daniel:Yeah.
Sir Daniel:Both directed by hight Williams videos.
Sir Daniel:Don't both directed by hype Williams.

Jay Ray:Collectives.
Jay Ray:So these like groups of these people who you loved coming together, that
Jay Ray:I want to be down remix with LA and light and yo-yo is just like crazy
Sir Daniel:when they, when they, when they performance today, I bet you, I
Sir Daniel:bet you, you have to pay them extra.
Sir Daniel:Actually to perform that only because they know that people are going
Sir Daniel:to go berserk when they hear that.
Sir Daniel:So if there's a remix that makes you feel this way, we want to hear about it, send
Sir Daniel:it to, um, cue points, the show@gmail.com.
